Get an Energy Audit for your Home

Happy Valentine’s Month! Have you ever heard the expression “Cold Hands, Warm Heart”?  Well, we at EcoHOMES think you can have a warm heart as well as warm hands AND warm feet! So, this month we’d like to focus attention on the warming benefits of conducting an energy audit for your home. Among other important benefits, an energy audit identifies areas where heat can escape your home, causing drafts and uneven temperature variations in your rooms.

An energy audit is a comprehensive assessment by a professional of your home’s energy usage. This process identifies areas of inefficiency and potential safety and air quality issues, then provides tailored recommendations to enhance energy efficiency and address any health issues such as moisture and mold. When you have an energy audit done, a professional energy auditor will run tests to assess the effectiveness of your building envelope (exterior walls, foundations, roof, windows and doors). The auditor will also examine your heating systems to check for safety and efficiency. By utilizing specialized tools and techniques, the auditor can detect air leakage and insulation deficiencies, then recommend targeted improvements that can positively impact your home’s energy performance. Check out this brochure from Efficiency Maine for more details on the testing that is performed.

Upon completion of the energy audit, you can expect a detailed report outlining the auditor’s findings and providing practical recommendations for energy-saving upgrades specific to your home. By understanding the areas in which your home can be optimized, you gain valuable insights that empower you to make informed decisions about energy-efficient upgrades. The audit itself, which costs $300-$500, may be eligible for a federal tax credit, and many weatherization upgrades are eligible for rebates and tax incentives through federal programs and Efficiency Maine. For more information, check out the weatherization myths and facts sheet from EM.

We encourage all EcoHOMES supporters to schedule an energy audit for your homes. Taking this step not only benefits you individually but also contributes to our shared commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable living. If you have any questions or would like assistance in arranging an energy audit, feel free to sign up for an Energy Coach on our website or find an energy auditor from the vendor locator on the EM website. Together, let’s take positive action towards a more energy-efficient and environmentally conscious community.
