Toward a Plastic-Free Future: Join York’s EcoHomes Movement!
A powerful movement is taking root in York, and it’s all about building a cleaner, healthier, more sustainable future—starting with saying goodbye to single-use plastics. At the heart of this change is the inspiring York High School Eco Club, whose efforts recently led to the adoption of a new town ordinance aimed at reducing plastic waste. Now, it’s time for all of us to build on their momentum.
Small Actions, Big Impact: Simple Ways to Go Plastic-Free
You don’t have to overhaul your entire life to make a difference. Try incorporating these easy habits into your daily routine:
-
Skip the Extras: When dining out or ordering takeout, politely request no plastic straws, utensils, or stir sticks.
-
Be Ready: Keep a reusable set of utensils and a straw in your bag or car so you’re always prepared.
-
Drink Smart: Carry a refillable water bottle and coffee mug wherever you go—it’s healthier for you and the planet.
A Win for York: New Plastic Reduction Ordinance
Thanks to the leadership of the Eco Club and the support of York residents, a new ordinance goes into effect on May 18, 2025, banning the sale and distribution of single-use plastic straws, utensils, and stir sticks in our community.
Why This Matters
Our current system of “take, make, and toss” treats resources as if they’re endless—and they’re not. Disposable plastic products don’t just disappear. Many end up as pollution, breaking down into microplastics and nanoplastics that enter our oceans, our food, our water, and even our bodies.
Recent studies, including research published in Environmental Science & Technology, have raised concerns about the health effects of ingesting nanoplastics—especially from plastic water bottles. Moving away from disposables isn’t just better for the planet—it’s better for us, too.
The goal? A circular, zero-waste system that reduces unnecessary extraction and consumption while prioritizing reuse, recycling, and long-lasting, toxin-free design.
A Legacy of Local Leadership
This latest ordinance builds on a proud local legacy: the 2015 Plastic Bag Ordinance and the 2019 Polystyrene Ban were both student-led initiatives. York’s youth continue to lead the way toward a more sustainable town—and their work is making a real difference.
Be Part of the Change
This is a moment to be proud of—and to act on. By making a few intentional choices each day, you can help York stay on track toward a plastic-free future.
Let’s continue the movement together. Your actions matter. Let’s protect our town, our waters, and our health—for ourselves and for generations to come.
